LIF（白細(xì)胞抑制因子），名字來源于它能夠誘導(dǎo)骨髓白血病細(xì)胞晚期分化。其它細(xì)胞活性方面的特性還包括：促進(jìn)不同類型靶細(xì)胞生長(zhǎng)和細(xì)胞分化，影響骨髓細(xì)胞代謝，衰亡，神經(jīng)發(fā)育，胚胎生長(zhǎng)和發(fā)炎。
LIF 已經(jīng)應(yīng)用于鼠胚胎干細(xì)胞培養(yǎng)以確定這些干細(xì)胞處于未分化狀態(tài)。然而，LIF 不能用于人胚胎干細(xì)胞培養(yǎng)。

LIF, derives its name from its ability to induce the terminal differentiation of myeloid leukaemic cells. Other properties attributed to the cytokine include: the growth promotion and cell differentiation of different types of target cells, influence on bone metabolism, cachexia, neural development, embryogenesis and inflammation.
LIF, has been used in mouse embryonic stem cell culture to maintain the stem cells in an undifferentiated state, however, LIF is not required for culture of human embryonic stem cells.
StemRD produces LIF in soluble form from E.coli as a single-chain polypeptide containing 181 amino acids with a molecular mass of 20 kDa. This non-tagged protein is purified by a series of chromatography.
