LIF（白細胞抑制因子），名字來源于它能夠誘導骨髓白血病細胞晚期分化。其它細胞活性方面的特性還包括：促進不同類型靶細胞生長和細胞分化，影響骨髓細胞代謝，衰亡，神經(jīng)發(fā)育，胚胎生長和發(fā)炎。
LIF 已經(jīng)應用于鼠胚胎干細胞培養(yǎng)以確定這些干細胞處于未分化狀態(tài)。然而，LIF 不能用于人胚胎干細胞培養(yǎng)。
StemRD 公司生產(chǎn)的LIF 是從大腸桿菌中獲取含有181個氨基酸，分子量為20kDa的可溶性單鏈蛋白質中制取。這條未標記單鏈蛋白質通過一系列層析純化獲得。

LIF, derives its name from its ability to induce the terminal differentiation of myeloid leukaemic cells. Other properties attributed to the cytokine include: the growth promotion and cell differentiation of different types of target cells, influence on bone metabolism, cachexia, neural development, embryogenesis and inflammation.
LIF, has been used in mouse embryonic stem cell culture to maintain the stem cells in an undifferentiated state, however, LIF is not required for culture of human embryonic stem cells.
StemRD produces LIF in soluble form from E.coli as a single-chain polypeptide containing 181 amino acids with a molecular mass of 20 kDa. This non-tagged protein is purified by a series of chromatography.
